The word Scientology comes form the Latin scio, meaning "to know" , and the Greek logos, "study of". Literally, "the study of knowledge", or "knowing how to know". It is often described as an applied religious philosophy. Put simply, this means that Scientology is the study of man, and his interaction with the universe, and further, provides practical tools for improving himself, both in his present environment, and on a spiritual level.

Scientology, whilst religious in nature and directly relating to the spiritual nature of man, does not enter into the existence of a supreme being or God, beyond acknowledging that such does exist. It is for this reason that Scientology is not at odds with or deny the practice of any other religion, in particular where it has as its goal the betterment of man.

Scientology is practiced by hundreds of thousands, if not millions the world over. Many Scientologists visit their local Church of Scientology, which exist in every continent and most countries of the world, while others may study and apply Scientology from the many books on the subject.
